There is an unbreakable bond between the arrangement of letterforms on a page and the intended communication. Curiously the disciplined structure of typography allows endless variations in the expression of ideas and facts – the grid is fundamental – adhered to, or broken. A personal observation on the ‘typographic link’ between designers – and their audience – whatever their native language.
Freda Sack originally studied typography at Maidstone College of Art, School of Printing, however an increasing interest in the letterforms that carry the information led to her career as a type designer. After working for various font manufacturers, and involvement with rapid advances in font technology, she co-founded The Foundry in 1990 with David Quay to develop a range of exclusive typefaces. Since 2001 she has run her own company Foundry Types Ltd, managing The Foundry library, and continuing with commissioned typefaces. She is co-designer of The Foundry™ typeface library. Commissioned typefaces, amongst others, include: WWF, NatWest Bank, Cossette, Yellow Pages (awarded D&AD Silver), Swiss Airlines, Brunel UK railway signage, and Lisbon Metro fonts. Freda is a design education advisor and lectures internationally. Currently UCA governor, ISTD Board director [International Society of Typographic Designers]. Freda has a passion for letterforms, and likes to make this happen ‘typographically’.
