London’s streets are rich in examples of public lettering, including commemorative inscriptions, shop fascias, street names and utility markers. Starting at St Bride’s, heading through the City to Smithfield and ending near Farringdon station, the walk will consider the differing roles of architectural and fascia lettering, discuss the factors which separate good from bad, and touch on the history of this part of the capital.
Phil Baines is a graphic designer, writer and Professor of Typography at Central Saint Martins. Long fascinated by public lettering he has written extensively on the subject including the book Signs: lettering in the environment with Catherine Dixon (Laurence King 2003).
