The Cranach Press ‘Hamlet’ (1928–30) is an early example of an artist’s book and a milestone in the history of the private presses. This exhibition demonstrates some visual links between Craig’s work for Stanislavskii’s Moscow production of the play and the handprinted Cranach Press volumes. It explores the typographic differences between the German and the English editions and indicates other aspects of the book which were determined by Craig, rather than by Count Harry Kessler, the founder and owner of the Press.
The curator, Dr Lindsay Newman, is an internationally recognised Craig scholar and has twice given the Gordon Craig Memorial Lecture.
