James Clough
Tuesday 16 November 2004. This was a highly informative and entertaining lecture, well illustrated and presented. James Clough gave a detailed history of Mistral and also showed some of its imitators and many of its forebears ? some of which were published much earlier than people may think.
He also provided a critique of Mistral, including the problem of using it in Italian, in which many words end in i or o. These letters have exit strokes in Mistral that sit uncomfortably at the end of words. James showed other versions of Mistral that have since been developed to address this problem. He also illustrated how Mistral has been used and abused over the years for a variety of purposes from shop signs and menus to book jackets and posters.
