How to use the library

The collections of the Library are extensive. To fully exploit the collections it is worthwhile taking some time to familiarise yourself with our finding aids and procedures. The librarians are always on hand and will be happy to help you.

Browsing the shelves

The shelves in the reading room contain only a fraction (7%) of the Library’s total holdings, but the standard works of all the subject areas are to be found there; a selection of recent works plus recent copies of trade journals can also be found in the reading room. If you are beginning your research, you may want to browse the shelves of the relevant section in St Bride Library; material is arranged by subject area and guides to the subject arrangement are available. You can also search the online catalogue for further references.

Specific reference and subject search

If you are searching for a known item, or want to find the full extent of our holdings, it is best to check the online catalogue first. Please note the accession number and whether the item is on open or closed access. All closed access material needs to be requested using forms available in the Library, it can also be ordered in advance by email, facsimile, telephone and letter.

On-line catalogue

The Library’s catalogue is available online as part of the City of London Corporation's library catalogue. It is also available as part of the Bookhad website, a co-operative effort supporting nationwide research in book history and book design.
